Steering colum

I have a 84 F150 4x4 with tilt steering. The steering wheel has exesive movement (up down, side to side) and failed inspection because of it. The play is inside the steering colum right in the "joint" where the tilt lever goes in. I removed the steering wheel hoping to gain access to that area but it doesnt seem I can get deep enough into the colum to find the problem. I figured there'd be some sort of bearing or joint or something that could be replaced, but it looks like maybe the whole steering colum would have to be replaced as one unit.

Does anybody know if that's true? My manual doesnt go into any detail about it. It shows the removal of the steering wheel but not much else.

after a couple 4 letter words I think I figured it out. But I'm hung up on the wires that feed into the colum. The plate with the hazard and blinker gizmos doesnt have enough slack in the wires to allow it to slip over the steering shaft. I see the screws that hold on the part I need to remove but cant get to them untill this plate is removed. Any ideas?

There are a few screws deep in the assembly that have to be removed or tighted up. If you have the turn signal cam assembly out you can usually take flashligh and see down inside to the ones I'm talking about. I could have swore I seen a diagram floating around this site which shows all the screws.

I found those screws (there's 3 of them) and was able to remove them, but I'm unable to remove the 'plate' that houses the turn signal cam and hazzard swithch. There isnt enough slack in the wires to allow the plate to come up off of the steering shaft and I dont see anywhere that the wires plug or disconnect. I'm also not able to see any slack to feed from. With out that removed the rest of the column cant be removed.

There is a plastic cover (just past the tilt joint) that covers all the internals, one screws holds it in place, then just wrestle it off, then there are 4 bolts (in a square) around the colume that holds the tilt part of the column to the rest of the column, take a ratch and socket, with a swivel, and tighen them up, won't take you but a half an hour.

You have to pull up on wires to get some play, check for clamps on the wires first. Griff777
