alternator woes.....

Looking for some advice on alternators. My 03 7.3 PSD has now consumed 3 alternators in just over two years and 44k miles. The truck is stock except for two small stereo amps, ( it ate two alternators before these amps were installed so I'm left to assume they are not the problem. Any advice? This alternator is the first I have to pay for and install myself. I really don't want this to be a yearly holiday, Alternator Replacement Frustration Day. High Output maybe?? Thanks in advance everyone!

Sounds like a voltage regulator type problem. I just replaced my first alternator at 131000 miles and 10 years of use, and only because the bearings on the old alternator blew out the back of it. I would look towards a voltage problem, not an alternator problem. And if this is the third one in as many years, I would say the dealer only fixed the resulting problem, not the source. There should be some accountability on their part as the source of the alternators failing was not fixed.
