Question about oil

Just wondering if it really matters about using 15w40 during the winter or 5w30 during the summer? I have 15w40 in now and i'll be changing it in another 2000 miles and by that time we'll just be getting into our coldest weather (january febuary) so should i just put 15w40 in then or should i switch to 5w30? I always plug the truck in and when i say coldest we're talking single digits now and then. I think I'd be fine, just wanted to check with the more experienced.

I don't think that there is any diesel oil rated at 5w-30. You need something that is API rated at least CH-4 (CI-4 is better still). You won't find a CH-4 diesel oil that is a 5w-30. You will find 10w-30 in a dino oil and 5w-40 in a syn.

Ford says 15w-40 is preferred down to 30*F and can be used down to 0*F. But if your temps are consistently below 30*, your PSD will start a lot easier with 10w-30.

I see that you are in Ohio, so you will see a lot of <30* weather. Your PSD will probably like a 10w-30 dino or 5w-40 syn. a lot better this winter. Go back to 15w-40 in the spring.

Can you safely alternate between dino and synthetic???? I was told a while back that you couldn't go back to dino once the synthetic was used. I can't recall the reason given, but I think it had something to do with the seals. It's he** to get old!!

I have heard that before too about the not being able to switch back and forth.
But why would you wanna switch back to dino once you go synthetic???? you can run the stuff for 50,000 miles as long as you have it tested every filter change, at 5k. another reason for it is the cold weather starts. case in point.
I started my truck last nite at 2:30, it had sat for a good 10 hours so I know she was cold and I beleive the -12 it was COLD!!!she fired right up, wait to start light goes off, crank it, and she just ripped. you will LOVE the synthetic. no doubt about it.

You can mix the synth and regular oil, no problen. But I would go Synth at 5W40 and stick to it. Year round.

Grinch wins the Golden oil award! Yes, it has been proven with modern oil that synthetic and petroleum oil chemistries are fully compatible with each other. The 5w-40 year round isn't a bad recommendation either.
