I am trying to install an after market sunpro tach in my son's 89 BII, 5 speed. The coil has 2 red wires with light green stripe and they are both under the same connection. The other wire is green with a light yellow stripe. I have hooked the green wire from the tach up to all three wires at one time or another and the tach does not work. I even took the first tach back and exchanged it for another but the second tach will not work either. What am I doing wrong?
Tach should have 4 wires. 1 is a ground, 1 is a 12v with the keyswitch on, 1 is for the tach lighting and goes to your dash light circuit, The last wire goes on the negative or - side of the coil.
First things first, take the connectors that come in the kit and toss them (the ones for splicing into the wires).
Second does the Tac you bought have 4 wires? Red, Green, White, and Black
Red is the main power
Green is for the light
White goes to the (as you are looking at the coil) left side of the coil connector, tacs run off of the ground side of the coil
Black goes to ground
had a similar 2 or 2 1/2" sunpro tach in my 86 ranger... and yes, both hotrod and dirty are right - the tach trigger wire goes to the negative side of the coil, the batt. lead goes to the ignition 'run' (+) circuit, the ground wire goes to a GOOD ground (I think I connected mine to the steering column mount) and the light wire goes to the dash lighting circuit (+).
The new tach has 4 wires. red wire is hot wire +, black wire is for ground, white wire is for light, and the instructions say that the green wire goes to the neg.- side of the coil. The coil on the truck's fender well has 3 wires connected to it. The coil has 2 red wires with light green stripes and they are both under the same connection on the left side of the coil, looking down at the coil from the drivers side fender. The other wire is green with a light yellow stripe and it is on the far right side of the coil. There looks like another place for a wire between these 2 sets of wires but there is not another wire. I hooked the green lead from the tach, which the instructions said was the tach lead that needs to be connected to the neg.- side of the coil. My question is which wire is the neg.- side of the coil?
Turn your ignition to the run position without starting the engine. After unplugging the coil Check with a voltmeter to see which wire has 12volts this is the positive side.
I'm surprised there wasn't a "TACH" imprinted on the negative side of the coil's OEM connector on the vehicle... just remembered seeing that on my Ranger, our BII, and an old 77 Pinto that (dis)graced my teenage years...
