Rear disk Conversion

I have been thionking about converting my 1978 F-100's rear drum brakes to disk. I found this rear disk brake conversion kit from summit racing. (Part number WIL-140-0261B) You can see it at www.summitracing.com

It says the kit is for a ford 9 inch axle made from 1957 to 1987. Is this the kit I need? It sells for 445 bucks which is a lot cheaper than I thought I would have to spend or a disk conversion kit.

Has anyone ever done a rear brake disk conversion? Is there anything I need to know? The rotors with this kit are just over 11 inches in diameter. Will the 15 rims fit over the disks and calipers or will I need to step up to bigger rims?

Your truck should have the 9" Ford rear axle, unless someone changed it at some time in it's life, so if that kit is for a 9", it should work . Make sure it has provision for parking brake. Alot of rear disc conversions don't provide for parking brake and most state's DOT's require it to be on the truck and in working order. The factory drum size was 11" on some 9" axles, 10" on others. I don't know if the caliper on an 11" rotor would be a problem with 15" wheels or not. Might want to call Summit on that one.
