Long-tube Headers

I have a cat back system on my truck now, but lately, I've been looking at my options for headers. I know that shorties usually drop right into place, but I also know that long tubes perform better. My question is are long tubes legal? (If I do long tubes, I would also replace the exhaust with 2 high flow cats an x or h pipe and 2 high flow mufflers) Right now I don't really have to worry about the exhaust emissions b/c where I am going to school they don't have that test yet, but I will have to worry about it in about 4 years or so when I graduate and move back into the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Thanks for the advice guys.

I put Hedman long tubes on my 79, they are emission legal, and come with the CARB sticker. I believe their website will tell you if they are legal.

It all depends on what kind of vehicle you have. Most long tubes for newer vehicles, will displace O2 sensors. You will have to run MIL eliminators (Illegal) to gett he engine to run right for emmission reasons. The eleminators fool the computer and the emmission systems. I have Banks "torque tube" headers, which are classified as short tube. The tubes are slightly smaller in diameter so you dont lose so much low end torque. I love them. Not to mention the rest of the exhaust system that I changed over from the highly restrictive factory exhaust. In case you were wondering I have a 03' super duty with a V10.
