Diesel Tach

Can i use a diesel tach on my 300?
It goes to 4500 and my truck never even sees 3000rpm
Will it plug up like a gasser tach will?

I'm no expert on tach's, but my '84 6.9 diesel has a tach. Unlike gasoline engine tach's, which I believe are tied into the distributor or ignition, this one uses a sensor that senses two magnets attached to opposite sides of the crankshaft pulley. You could put such a tach on a gasoline engine no problem, just attach the sensor.
