Noisey 4sp O/D

I have a 4 sp single rail O/D which I am trying to isolate a source of noise.
In neutral with the clutch depressed, it is fine, with the clutch out however, still in neutral, it is very noisy. Classic input shaft bearing noise I thought. I also noticed though, if I coast in neutral with the clutch out, it is fine, and as I slow to a stop, it gradually gets noiser, maxing out when I come to a complete stop.
I am having difficulty visualising what can be quiet when both input and output shats are turning, but noisy when the input shaft is turning but output shaft not.
Any ideas? It is a 1982 coupled to a 300six.
Thanks

Similar problem with my side mounted linkage 4 speed od. Screeching in 1st and 2nd. Looking at a T5, but not sure it will hold up. But I ain't gonna spend 500 on that 4 speed to rebuild it with the grand canyon gap between 2 and 3.....

I wave had so many problems with my SROD making noise I am just ready to ditch it. All of my problems were in the input and output shaft bearings. Once I replaced both bearings my noise went away. Now its making noise again. I used to think it was a decent transmission but after working on it a couple of times I have pretty much had it.

Thanks, interesting feedback. I was already shopping around to get it rebuilt, I think every bearing is shot. I used to hate the massive gap between 2nd and 3rd, especially up the twisty hill I navigate every day, but I kinda got used to it. I was also looking at a bolt in swap option but couldn't find anything that didn't have the hydraulic clutch.

Had my single rail overdrive rebuilt by a place here in Minnesota called Zombrota Bearing and Gear it cost around $650 bucks but it's just like new again. You have to take the trans out and ship it to them a lot of the time they'll have one on the shelf and have it back to you the next day' or they'll rebuild your case if that's the way you want to go..
I know Vancouver is a long way off,and it might be pretty spendy to ship it that far but thought you might want to hear someone else who spent the money to rebuild a SROD..

Thanks srod, gives me a bit more confidence in a rebuild. The way I look at it, it has already lasted 22 years. I'll check locally, but thanks for the ball park figure.

What abouy converting to one of the later model 5 speed o/d. You could probably find a rusted truck or something with a blown motor for cheap with all the parts.. There more plentiful and hold up better then the 4 speed o/d.
