I own an 87 Ranger 2wheeler 2.9L FI. For the last year I have been having problems with
the engine. It starts great and runs fine, but at time when Im driving mostly in town it
begins to stutter and gag, and loses power. After a few minutes of driving at a steady
RPM it quits. Also at stop lights the engine Idles rough, smells rich and some times dies.
It will start right up again and go. this repeats about every five to ten minutes.
I tried new spark plug wires and EGR valve, changed the fuel filter and several other
ideas. No improvements. Does any one have any suggestions
I've had similar problems with my 87. It's a 2.3l 4 cylinder. I've found certain fuel additives to help. I'll look for the most recent one if I can remeber to. But a really cheap additive is a few ounces of ATF added just before you pump the gas. It cleans everything, but a bit illegal because of the little bit of smoke it causes. Try checking your exhaust system. I've moved it to straight out the back. That has helped some, I think, because it eliminates a 90 degree bend. You might have a stopped up cat converter. That can cause rough running. If you can get to it, see if you can't just knock the element out (also illegal), and the engine will run better.
Mine has 235,000 miles on it, all put on by me.
Let me know if anything helps and what you think.
