I have a 98 with a 3.0. Ever since I got it, it has pinged exesively. It pings when I give it full throttle, and when going up hills. If I put 93 in it it doesn't ping. But gas is getting expensive and I want to run 87. Is this normal? and what can I do to fix it.
Also my passenger seat shakes when there is no weight in it. Does anyone else have this problem?
I hate to tell you this, but the pinging seems to be a "design feature" on the 98-00 3.0's. Everyone I know with a 3.0 has the problem and you see it discussed a lot. On my neighbor's '98 3.0, the dealer retarded the timing to fix the pinging but now his Ranger only gets 17 mpg and it's gutless and still pings. He's getting Ford to buy it back. On the other hand, a guy I work with had his '99 fixed by the dealer (he doesn't know what was done) and it still pings but just slightly. He hasn't noticed any difference in power or mileage so he's pretty happy with it. I would have this checked out by the dealer while you still have a warranty and don't be shy about taking it back until it's fixed.
The '98-'00 3.0L is the flexible fuel motor and is designed to work with Gasoline or E85, the problem is that the computers are not smart enough to change everything enough to compensate of the difference in fuels. The E85 is very potent stuff, and what Ford neglected to tell everyone is that it will ping when using less than 93 octane. Unfortunately I do not know of any way to fix it without reprogramming the computer with will make it no better than the 4.
On the subject of the 2.3L ping. This is very odd and have never heard of these doing this. Try some better gas or a different company. I have a '97 sans Air Baffle, and Air Muffler. I use Amocco 93 Octane religiously and it has never pinged, I will let you know if that changes when I install the Gibson exhaust on it.
