I put a Toyota box in Mutt, my 55 pickup. I am using the stock column now. I am considering going to a GM column and was wondering which length column to order.
What exactly would I need, ref: the hookup end at the box.
Any column drop preferred? I am a little bigger than average, about 6'2", for what that would matter.
Thanks in advance,
Paul G.
PS: I know I can get much of this info from Mid 50s girls, they are helpful, etc....but I wanted to ask you guys first, in case there are different ways to attain the end.
PPS: Who sells the columns at best $? Anybody, or are prices fixed like most of the parts? I am looking for a tilt, key on dash, no shifter (it's auto on the floor), not sure of finish yet, either painted or shiny.
I got the paintable steel Ididit column from MF since they had the best price it wasn't but a few bucks more than a rebuilt GM and then you need to clean all the bracketry off the OEM . The column length, drop depends on what steeringwheel you plan on using and what driving position you like as well as your seats. We went with a dished Grant 15" wheel which required an adapter that lengthens the column 2+". I bought the 32" column and 3 1/2" drop as well as the floorplate for the T box. I now wish I would have bought a 30" instead, with the column drop down the shaft right against the wiring grommet the drop just barely catches the front edge of the dash. With the 3 1/2" drop the hole in the floorplate needs to be ovaled out a fair amount. If I had decided on a smaller wheel or my seats sat lower I would have opted for a 4" or 4 1/2" drop. I bought the swivel billet floor mount which will cover the elongated hole in the floor. Now I'm working on solving the return line clearance issue I have at the box.
