Well it looks like the funds just aren't there for wheels and tires right now, so it will have to be new tires on the stock 18' wheel. The Rugged Trail tires that came stock are pretty bad in the snow, mud or anything else becides pavement, so I have decided on the BFG all-terrain KO's. They do not however make them in the stock 275 65 18 size ( they make a 285 65 18).
Here are my questions:
1) Will the change in tire size from a 275 to a 285 be okay on the stock wheel? (just making sure)
2) Will this change cause the speedo to be off at all?
3) I do not like the look of the white lettered tires so I plan on turning the white letters in. I do want to take the white letters off the tires though.(so you can't see them on the inside at all) Does anyone have any tips on getting the white letters off the tires?
In general I've been told you can change the diameter of the wheel and tire combo by 2% and not affect anything. That being said check the overall diameter of the 275 and 285 (you can find this in the tire specs) and see if it's within the 2% range. If so no worries. If it's greater you can still change them but you may throw the speedo out quite a bit and it may affect your ABS.
I did a lot of reasearch on this exact tire and size as I am buying it when my rubber wears down. Yes, it will fit fine on the stock rims just fine and my speedometer is fast anyway so adding a slightly larger tire will make it accurate. I have a GPS navigation system and it shows that my speedomter reads 1.8 mpg faster than Im really going so adding that larger tire (its only .9 inches larger) makes the speedometer almost dead on. Adding that tire size change will change the speedometer about 1.5 mph at 70 mph. The ford trucks show fast anyway so putting on that larger tire will make your speedometer MORE accurate than stock.
Carnivore, thanks for the reply. I am planning on turning the white letters on the inside but you can still see them from the other side of the vehicle, if you are down low and look under the truck (I guess I am just ****!). I wanted to know if anyone knows of a good way to get the white off of the letters.
Except for the fact you are mounting tires that need 8 to 10" wide rims on a 7.5" rim you'll be fine. You might need to run a little less air in them to get the outer treads down on the road. When you pinch the mounted beads tighter together like that they have a tendency to wear down the center of the tread when you run normal air pressures.
Dunk, now you are making me a little worried about this set up. I thought that going from a 275 65 18 to a 285 65 18 on a 7.5 wheel was really no big difference. Are you saying that this set up is a little risky?

a 1/2 inch difference will make no difference in what you need from the air pressure. I went to several reputable tire dealers and they said that 1/2 inch is so little that it makes no difference. Its really only 1/4 of an inch on each side.

Cobra,
Don't worry about it. That difference is so neligible it won't make a difference. Trust me. I did a ton of research and the Craven tire and auto, Sears tire and one local place all told me that 1/2 inch below recommended is fine,,, but they each said more than that is not a wise thing.
