No Charge To Battery

No Charge To Battery
1987 F150 300 Straight 6
Electrical problem, pulled alternator and had it tested. (tested bad) replaced it and started the truck, still getting no good reading on the V meter.
Note: was told that this Alt. is internalaly regulated ( 1 of 6 Ford makes that cost more) However on the firewall next to the battery is a small balck unit that loooks like a V Regulator.
??? If the regulator in built into the Alt. then what is the black unit on the firewall.
Also the main positive lead from the battery goes to the black unti. on the firewall. Along with the primary cable from the Starter. Also i can still start and drive the truck... only I believe I am I am driving off the battery
