I have a 94 Explorer limited with a 4.0 and 150,000 miles. It needs a new locker converter in the trans. about 700 bucks. Trans. shop said with that many miles you would be better off with a rebuild. The quote on a rebuild is 1300. So i am i am getting rid of it. I replaced alot of stuff on it already. (tires, brakes, radius arm bushings, front hubs, battery, and fuel filter) I know alot of that stuff is due to 150000 miles, but if i rebuilt the trans i better not stop there. So if stuff keeps going on it i have that much invested it would be better to just keep it and fix everything that goes bad.
Anyways, i found a 2000 limited V8 AWD with 44000. List price is 15995 they told me 4000 for mine, and out the door for 11995. I would say it is a fair deal. My question is how do you guys like they V8? Any problems with this year of explorer? I talked to my mechanic he has a 97 w/ a V8 he said it sould do better on gas then my 94. Yesterday i told they salesman to run a check to see if everything has been serviced on it. Today i am going to go back pull the dip stick on the trans and check the color of the oil. I also told the salesman i wanted a carfax report. Tuesday, he told me that whomever had it before traded it on another explorer, so i am guessing it was an older couple who had it before. Anyways, just looking for the feed back, and today i am going back to see if they can knock of couple hundred bucks off, so we can seal the deal.
Also, was 97 the first year for the V8? Do you guys think 11995 is a pretty good deal? Everyone i talked to told me to jump on it.
Thanks in advance

I've had two 4.0 Explorers before buying my '99 V8 AWD. I get a few miles less per gallon with the V8 than the 4.0s. May be because it's so much fun to push the go pedal. Anyway, I highly recommend the V8 if you don't need a low range. As to price, I would check with KBB and Edmunds and see what they say.
I have had two 4.0s and now drive a 96 V8 AWD. I could not be happier. The 4.0s ran well and were reliable but the V8 has much more power and to be honest I don't see any difference in mileage. I get 17.5 - 18 local and 21.5 - 22 highway MPG. It is great for pulling my daughters horse trailer (about 14 MPG) and does great in the snow. I don't see myself ever going back to a V6.
