I"m trying to get some paint and very small scratches off my chrome bumper.I used an abrasive cut wax but did"nt get as much off as I wanted.Nas any one wet sanded chrome. If so what grit did you use. This is just paint and very minor scratches.I"m noy looking for a show piece just some cleaning Thanks.
I'd probably use a new razor blade to scrape the paint off; pretty much like peeling stickers or paint off of glass. Not much you can do about the scratches. I worked in a chrome shop for 12 years and the buffers we use to put a mirror finish on aluminum and stainless will not buff scratches out of chrome.
To me, that seems like it would be like washing a greasy pot with a stick of butter. I'm pretty sure the sandpaper will dull the chrome, so no, I don't think it's a good idea. If you want to be totally non-destructive, try a chemical paint stripper.
We'd probably charge about $225.00 - $250.00 CDN, so maybe 175.00 US. You'd have to call around. We do a lot of US work through a place called Mr. T's restoration in Spokane as well as Allied Plating I think they're in Spokane as well. Everything gets shipped here and shipped back when done.
i would do the razor blade thing mentioned above. when you go to do it though get some glass cleaner or water with a few drops of dish soap in it to provide lubrication and prevent scratching.
When im detailing cars that have rough chrome areas with surface rust, I use a very fine steel wool that is soaked in wax , and by rubbing lighlty with that most (if not all) the rust comes off. I would think that this would work for small areas of unwanted paint on a chrome bumper. Good luck.
We stained our fence and the wind took quite a bit to the trucks-way out in the front of the house. We clay-bared & waxed the truck and got it all off the paint, but for the chrome bumpers I used plain old acetone nail polish remover- took all the stain off, with out ruining it at all. Of course you cant get it on the paint or plastic, only the metal-chrome parts.
