New Exhaust Needed
New Exhaust Needed
Sorry for the lengthy rattling on here but I have a lot of questions and I need some good advice from all you experts. So I hope you all can help me here.
Since I know my truck needs a new muffler anyway. I’ve decided to style it up a little and add a duel exhaust to compliment the new paint job and 31” tire upgrade. I have spent the last few days reading these threads in hopes of getting a few good ideas on the best exhaust system I should get. However there are so many opinions I don’t know if it helped. So what I’m going to do is tell you all what I have and what I want/need and see how many replies I get.
My truck is a 95 F-150 4X4 with a 302, Auto trans, Standard cab, short bed (in case pipe length makes a difference.) All stock, i.e. Manifolds, Cats, etc. I’m not sure if mine has two cat’s like I have read in this forum that some do but I do know it has at least one and since I live in a strict emissions county the cat(s) will remain. Something simple from the cat. back and nothing real loud as to p!$$ off the neighbors, but I would like it to rumble enough so that they know I’m there. I also have a fiberglass shell and tow a speedboat and have no choice but to go with side exit pipes. From what I have read in this forum as well as other places on the web a Flowmaster setup appears will do the job fine. In fact I found on there site a ready made system #17239 that includes 50 series muffler and all pipes and hardware. I listened to there sound bytes and thought it sounded good enough. The price was around $500 but then I found through www.autopartswarehouse.com the same system or at least a system with the same part number for a little over $300 that in addition listed 2.5” stainless tips. The price looked right and I was thinking about going for it but then I started reading this forum and from allot of threads I have read the 50 series doesn’t appear to be a favorite (not loud enough). Like I said I’m not out to wake sleeping campers when I’m down at the lake, or something that will drive me crazy after a two hour road trip however I would like something that compliments my V8. And of course like everybody else I’m looking for something that will last a while at a good price.
This forum appears to have people that know more about this than I do so any advice would be helpful.
Thanks in advance.

For the good tone and loudness in Flowmaster mufflers you need the 40-series. However, for your on-highway the 40-series is a "****ed off hornets nest" underneath the truck. They drone. Bad. Even the Delta flow. You might go to a shop and get their featured muffler. Tell them you want it to come alive above 2500-3000 rpm's or so. This will keep you quiet where you want it - cruising speed and around town - while allowing you to roar when you want to.
I don't know about you, but when I had my muffler cut off, it was nice. It had a nice idle tone, growled just a bit on acceleration too. It was only loud when I romped the throttle and screamed for redline - basically only loud when I wanted it to be. Before you spend big bucks on a Flowmaster, you really ought to do yourself a favor and listen to your truck without the muffler. Honestly - you're having the exhaust system taken off anyways for a new replacement. Get out the sawzall and cut out the muffler just before you get ready to do the exhaust. You might decide that's enough and just run pipes back from the cat to behind the rear tire. If you went up to a 2.5-2.75" single exhaust exiting before the rear tire, it'd be great.

I have the 40 series delta flow and I can barely hear it at 70 MPH with the radio off. I have heard the super 40 is similar. I love the sound of mine and I'd recommend it.
What I did and would do again is go to the local muffler shop, tell them the muffler you want and where you want the pipes to exit. Cost will be less than the catback system and they will have done all the work.
