I have a 92 4x4 with a 2.5" lift and 33s fit fine. I can probably fit 35s. You don't need much of a lift to put in a bigger tire. If your truck is stock you can probably already put in 31s without much trouble.
Tuff Country / Rough Country has a 2.5" kit, I have the 4x4 version on my truck. Like it except for the eccentric cam bolts. Also a body lift would cost about
$80-90 and let you clear 31" no problem, and probably 32's. When my truck had just a 3" body lift, I could fit 33's, but mine is a 4x4 and is 2" taller. I would reccomend doing a body lift if you want to fit bigger tires without a lot of investment. On the other hand, once you start lifting and modifying, you always want to go bigger, so keep that in mind when you make your descision. Have fun.
