I tried to start my truck yesterday after a drive it just rrrrrrrrrr then nothing. Tried rrrrrrrrr then nothing. ( no clicking sound from the solenoid) then rrrr and started. it started fine cold or since. It does take an extra second after turning the key. Had the charging system tested under load. It tested everything it i think solenoid, alternator, battery, grounds. except the starter. Could it be the ground on the starter. Its 4 years old rebuilt starter. How do you jump the solenoid ( next to the battery) correctly, the little terminal and the larger terminal closest to the battery? Also would hitting on the starter next time it doesn't start help? Is there a load tester for the starter, when its in the truck? could the problem be inside the steering column?

Yes.
Does the rrrrrr... mean the starter is spinning, but not turning the engine over? If this is the case, and it only does it during very cold weather, I bet you have old dirty grease up around the starter shaft. When the weather gets cold, the grease gets stiff and won't let the starter gear slide out to contact the flywheel.
It did it after a 1/2 drive. rrrrrrr means starter tring to turn over, but very slowly. It started right up ( cold engine) today with 5 degree weather.
