I used to have a 9 foot steel whip mounted on the tool box on my Z71. I ruined several flouresent lights and killed at least 2 pidgeons and one big white heron with it.
Well I finally got it done. I paid someone to help me out I got rid of the firestiks and went with a Wilson 1000, the installer drilled a hole through my roof and mounted it for me. Checked the SWR and I am at 1.2 or less throughout the range 1-40 channels. It works well only, for some reason I gotta have the sqelch pretty high, I get a lot of noise if I don't. Thanks for all the help guys!!!
Hey fixnair where do i get one of those amplifiers from?
BTW, I've got a Cobra Classic 29 w/ a Wilson 5000. I've got the CB under the middle seat with just the front showing. I've got the 5000 in the bed behind the toolbox w/ just a little of the black ball showing. I had it on the roof w/ a mag. mount, but i got tired of that look. Also, ant. came off chipped paint to the primer on my door.
I ran the cable through the grommet in the bed, through grommet and carpet under rear floor mat, up under middle seat.
DeerSniper, I bought mine from a friend and I don't know where he got it. I think someone gave it to him. You should be able to buy one at a CB shop at a truck stop probably. Good luck withit.
I use the mag mount as well. I have the whole radio and antenna on temp rigs so I just put it in when I am traveling. The rest of the time it is in the garage.
One little tip on the mag mount, cut a piece of thin felt in a circle a little bigger than the mount and put it on then the mount. It won't effect the grip, and it won't scratch the top.
I'm a newbie with 2cents to add,I bought a glass mount cell phone looking ant. from JC Whittney and mounted it on my backglass, it looked cool and inconspicious but didn't transmit for crap. I ended up buying a mirror mount bracket from a truck stop and mounted my ant. on my righthand tow mirror and ran the coax through the door opening and behind the kickpanel.

For future reference, there is a grommet right below the go pedal. If you use the ball mount for the antenna you need to cut off the end of the cable anyway as it connects direct to the wires. I used a punch, put a little hole in it and just pushed the cable through it. I also have my wiring for the electric fuel pump in the back running though it. Makes a reall good seal. If you need the screw on connector to attach to the antenna then you need to use one of the grommets in floor under the seats.
While we are on the CB topic, does anyone have any tricks for getting rid of alternator noise? I have tried different places for grounding and power. Still have the wine. I am however getting a good idea of engine speed without looking at the tach when I have the CB on, hehe.
I went ahead and installed a K40 roof mount and a vhf antenna roof mount at the same time. Just removed the dome light assemblies, drilled the holes from above (using an old screwdriver as a spacer between the metal and the headliner and fished the coax to the drivers side a post and down behind the weatherstriping. I ran my power leads thru the firewall access hole and connected directly to the battery. Seems to work pretty good, I just get some wind whistle from the antennas.
It works great thanks for the tip. I went with a single roof mount wilson 1000, I broke down and drilled a hole in my roof. I am happy with it, except , now at freeway speeds I hear a whistle from the antenna. No biggy.
