Tried manifold vacuum but it won't work because
it caused the engine to idle too fast. then with the idle speed corrected (lowered to 800) at the carb, the engine would stall when dropped into gear. If the idle speed was set with truck in gear, it would idle at 1500rpm in neutral.
With ported vacuum I had no vacuum at distributor at idle so idle speed was not effected.

Vac advance should be off the variable (ported) vac from the carb. It's there expressly to counter the problems you just mentioned. Very little vac at closed throttle - the vacuum comes on after the throttle is opened.
Or you could just run it with no vac advance at all, and have the dizzy recurved for all -mechanical function.
