I think my transmision is going bad but I'm not sure! I got the mazda version of a ranger it's a '96 with the 2.3L. I'm not sure what the problem is in my truck. At higher rpm's when I shift from 1st to 2nd I get a griniding noise as if I didn't push the clutch in all the way. The same thing happens when I shift from 3rd to 2nd. this only happens at higher rpm's. I'm so confused as why it does that. Do I need a new clutch? or are my synchros going bad? can anybody help me? if you can give me some advise on what I can do.
I don't know too much about transmissions, but from my experience it sounds like the synchros are going out on those gears. Probably caused by power shifting it like a race car.. Just a thought.
I agree with Jeff. Sounds like the synchro's are going out. Sounds a little early for this to happen, but a lot depends on driving habits and condtions. If you've recently had any tranny work done sometimes the mechanics will put in an oil that's to thick and will cause a similar problem.
yep, it is your synchros. and no, you didn't do anything wrong. i had a 92 2.3L with the mazda 5 speed and 2nd started to grind at about 50,000. 1-2, 2-3 all gone now. i have to give it some time between each shift - double clutch like a 54 peterbilt. also changed to 80-90 gear oil to quiet things down and reduce the amount of leakage from the shift rail plugs.
Need help with this, second trans. in (2) years. First one over 90,000 on it.
Rebuild or replace everything but casting.
up hill run on highway and lost D.,R. and Low. came home in second gear.
Fluid look fine, filter replaced 3mths ago.
The Mazda trans is famous for that. The syncros are weak in those trucks. Not uncommon. Mazda had to rebuild a trans for me on a 99 2.5l, because of grinding between 2nd to 3rd.

She's got some years on her goofball. Has the fluid ever been changed? The synchros might be just gummed up. Change it first and see what happens before panicking yourself into an expensive job.
