how much noise is the front diff supposed to make?
i purchased the truck over the spring so i had no time to test the four wheel!
it started snowing about two weeks ago up here in Fort Drum NY so i have been driving eith it on for the past couple of weeks and it just seems like the front diff is getting louder and louder.
If I have my hubs locked in (but not in 4x4) and go over 70MPH, I start getting harmonics and stuff, but it's from all that mass thrashing around under there. At speeds you'd sanely drive in 4x4 at, there are no strange noises. Your u-joints might have gone bad from lack of use, if the previous owner never exercised the parts by putting it in 4WD every once in a while.
Oh! And just in case you didn't know, being a new owner, you shouldn't spend a lot of time in 4x4 if you're not on slippery surfaces. Eventually stuff will bind up (this would cause strange noises) and eventually it will break (this will cause really gut-wrenching noises!) If you already know all that, and that's not the source of your noises, my apologies, but it's one of those things that not everyone "gets" if they haven't owned a 4x4 before so I thought I'd mention it.
