Gas smell. Help
The van had the smell of gas inside when we bought it. I figured it wouldn't be hard to find and fix. So far I'm not able to find it. Anyone with some ideas? Thanks.

Check the fuel pump to make sure its not leaking, check the fill tube if its rubber it may be rotted from age snd also ckeck the fuel hoses at the tank. If the van has carpet maybe someone spilled a can of gas?

Thanks for the reply. I have applied air pressure to a full tank and found that the only leaks are at the ventalation tube and after plugging that, the gas was pushed back out the fill area. There is no evidence of fuel leaking while it is running. At least not on the ground. Not sure about someone spilling gas on the carpet, but it does smell fresh. I was thinking that maybe some of the screws for the panels might have penetrated the skin and fumes from underneath the van are seeping in?

Take a close look at the fuel pump, there is a weep hole and if the pump is going bad fuel will come out of the hole. I just replaced the fuel pump on my '82 Buick Regal, 22yrs old and 102,000 miles because I would smell gas while driving but only some times. I could not see fuel coming out of the weep hole while the engine was running but part of the engine block and frame that was close to the the pump were very clean from the leaking fuel so it must have been leaking at higher rpm's.
