Remote start question
I actually have a '93 F-250, so I don't need the spare key or PATS bypass module. This just happens to be the thread where the knowledge on this product was, so....
Thanks to everyone for the great information.
They advice you cut the metal key part so that it cannot be used to start the car. The module use the key's transponder inside the plastic fob.
Hope this helps answer your question.
I installed mine two weeks ago and took me about seven hours. I soldered all wiring which is not easy given the wires are all under the driver side dash.
Good Luck.
I love mine and am thinking about putting one in my wife's car

The Ford transponder key usually has a larger thick head and the hole is normally off center, room for the chip. You can almost see where the chip goes into it.
Also, a red security light will flash at all times the truck is not runnig.
Yes those keys are expensive.
bypasskit.com has modules so you won't lose your key
good luck

For reference they make 3 different bypasses. You will NOT lose a key with any of these bypasses, but you MUST have 2 working keys to program them. These 3 bypasses will cover pretty much all of your Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicles.
1L2Z-19G365-AB - This bypass will work for 2003 Taurus/Sable, Ranger, Expedition and a bunch of others. Including the 2004 F-150. This is the most common bypass used. The smaller keys use this one.
1L3Z-19G365-AB - This covers your pre 2004 F-150's, Excursion, & Mustang. The bigger head keys use this one. If your key looks like the picture ( http://www.installz.com/uploads/post-10-1079934836.gif ) , you need this bypass.
1S4Z-19G365-AB - 03 Escape, Focus, Possibly the T-Bird I don't remember which one that uses offhand.
"I have seen a few Ford silver systems on Ebay, but I need the full part # to be sure it's for my year and model vehicle."
The silver system is universal. You can put it on ANY vehicle it is not made for specific cars. The bypass is the specific piece that you have to be sure of getting the correct one. Also make sure whoever you buy these from is including programming and installation instructions. The new powercode units don't come with ANY instructions in the box, just an owners manual.
When dealerships are slow instead outsourcing the installs, they pick a mechanic to give it a try. 10 hours later when the mechanic is ****ed and gives up, they call us to come fix them. The installs are usually scary at best and could very easily damage your vehicle would the mechanic not have given up. I see it all the time.. Everytime the mechanic says he will never attempt one again. I'm sure there are a few dealerships that normally install these in house, but not many. I can do the silver systems in under an hour flat from start to finish on certain vehicles. Average probably about 1.5 hours or a bit more if I'm not motived

Can anyone who's seen the DesignTech remote starter at their local Costco post the location here please? Hopefully one of those locations will correspond to a city where I have a friend I can bribe into picking one up for me.
Both kits will work on your 02 EB. As I mentioned the silver systems themselves are NOT vehicle specific they can be installed on ANY make/model out there. It's the bypasses that are specific and you have to double check to make sure are correct. The differences are that the old style has all external fuses, whereas the new ones have internal fuses. The new modules make for a much nicer install. The older style also have an external relay to play with that the new ones don't have. Feature wise the newer style has the ability for more options as well. For your basic install: lock, unlock, hatch pop, remote start, horn honk, park light flash, etc both modules can do the same. Another thing to remember is the old style is old therefore getting parts or remotes in the future may be difficult should you run into problems with the system. Good luck,
Mike
