Hi all, I'm a long time lurker on the list and now having trans problems. 1992 F250 with 7.3 and E4OD. While driving to town the other day, I noticed the transmission was having a hard time shifting into overdrive. I stopped at the first store and checked the fluid. It was about a quart low. Filled it up, and got back on the road. It worked OK, until I got into town and traffic. After the first couple of red lights, it wouldn't shift to 2nd until I let off the pedal. 2-3 shift worked pretty good, but would never shift to overdrive. I checked the wiring harness and linkage. Is there something simple I could be missing here? or is it definitely time for a rebuild?
I'm currently getting my 90 F250 tranny rebuilt by a friend. He says the E40D's are notorious for losing 1rst, and 3rd gears. Those are right about the times the tranny gives warning signs that it will soon need a rebuild. Mine decided to melt the first gear clutch pack together so everything but R which binded and park was first gear lol. I will run this by him and see what he thinks, he specializes in E40D's and 4L80E's.
mmullins,
Have you drawn possible codes from the computer? Usually the OD light will blink if the computer has found something wrong with it's ability to shift. Sometime it won't blink but the computer has still logged codes. You can have a dealership or trans. shop draw the codes, or buy a cheap code scanner, like "Actron" for about $30 U.S.
I'd suspect a sensor problem first. I have some information which you'd be interested in to test the various sensors (rpm sensor, fipl sensor, mlps, vss). I will send you an email. Replacing a sensor sure beats paying for an overhaul any day. R.A.
I had a similiar problem on my '92 E4OD and it turned out to be a faulty speed sensor on the drive shaft. The dealership replaced it and all was well. If your trans is original and hasn't been rebuilt you're a break-down looking for a place to happen. The early E4ODs were real turkeys. 65K was about all you could hope for from them. If you're going to replace it look for a reman that meets at least the '98 specs. Some shops are putting F550 components in their rebuilds. Good luck!
