Hey guys! New to the site. I just bought a 85 ford f150 short box 2wd. It has a feulie 302 with a 4 spd. It also has dual tanks. Ok heres low down,The fuel gauge doesnt work, the heater wont go to defrost, the wipers are very slow. Also Im hearing a hissing from the brakes under the dash but I can figure that out easy enuff. It wont restart after its warm ( figured its the starter getting hot) and today of all days, My cummins (ahem) developed a feul line leak so it lost prime, that was just as my wife calls and says shes on the interstate with a flat 30 miles away! Hows your day been?? lol So I took the ford up to school to get my daughter (2 miles out of town) and on the way back, she starts buckin real bad. Now i think i was out of gas, but anyway I played with the ignition while we were slowing down and it SEEMED to take off when ever I hit the key. It was also poping back thru the intake. Any ideas would be appreciated and sorry My first ford truck forum post had to like this instead of....WOW, This thing has bling!!! lol I like fords guys, but better yet i like anything that runs good!!! lol Merry Xmas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cant help ya with your problems, sorry......but i also have very slow wipers and after i turn them on they usually bogg down and stop completely...anyone know what i we should do????? is it the motor???
im guessin a weak motor. Its funny, about 7 years ago i had a truck just like this one. had pretty much all the same problems, but old age lol is making my memory act like my kids when they have work to do
Just off the top of my head. Check all battery cables for corrosion. If they even look remotely old, replace them. Also, make sure the secondary ground from the battery to the body is in good shape, and has a good contact with the body(not rusty). Start with that for now. The hot start problem could be as simple as a bad ground, and possibly in combination with dirty/corroded cables and battery terminal connections. A battery cable that is corroded inside it's insulated casing creates huge resistance. This might also explain a few of your other electrical problems as well. Secondly, check all plugs and connections in the systems that don't work/don't work properly for corrosion as well as broken wires. Check all fuses(redundant, but I'll say it anyways) and check to see if the battery is getting a good charge with a multi-meter set to DC volts. Post back with your findings. Fuelie vehicals depend on a good power source to run well, as do all your electrical devices.
ok heres what i found out tonite. The battery cables seem to be good all but one, its ?able so im replacing it. As soon as i get a chance im going to try another battery just to rule that out. I also looked tonite and there is a new starter on it.I know it could be bad already but nonetheless. I took some pics of a few things that I need to find out about. I have a bunch of ?vacuum lines that run from the pass. fender down past the battery. There is a pink one that is broken. Im not sure what its for. Also on my other 85 150 i had a wire coming out of the dist. ( stick with me guys ive been a chevy guy all my life) it was unsheethed and it seemed to make the truck jump and shudder when it wasnt connected good. well this one has the same thing. the wire comes right out of the plug and thats where it is unsheethed. I took pics of that too. I appriciate all the info guys as this will be an ongoing project to get it running good. I plan on putting a step side box on it and turning it into a prerunner. appearance only. Ill post back with what I find in the next days or so. I dont have a shop and its cold here so ill do this when i can.
I don't see a Ford one in there, but yahoo could be screwing up. Why not open your gallery here and post them on the board? Replacing the one bad cable may be the answer to most of your problems. As for the bared wire on the distributor, would be a good idea to cut it back a bit, and solder and shrinktube it back together to get a good connection and a water proof seal. If you can, unplug it, and then slide the wire out of the plastic connector plug, either replace the plug end of the wire with the appropriate type, or use some electrical contact cleaner to remove the corrosion, and slide a piece of shrink tube over it, and then heat it into place with a heat gun or Bic lighter. Replace it into the plug, and spray all the other contact leads in the plug and receptacle to make sure they're free of corrosion as well.
Looks like you are getting most of your questions answered but I noted you heard a hiss from the brakes that hasn't been addressed yet, Most likely it is the brake booster. Since you have to take teh master off to do it, may as well change both.
Besides, with an old truck that seems to have a few gremlins already in it, your fluid is likely rusty looking and could use a change anyway. I know I just bought a gallon of fluid for mine as I was shocked when I saw how bad mine looked and those little microscopic flakes are murder on your brake cylinders.
Once you fix the power problem, things should get easier. Buy yourself a Code checker while you are out. They are about $30 at any auato store or Wal-Mart. Clearing all your codes will save you headaches down the road when something goes wrong and you want to check codes and then can't recall if you always had that one or it is something new. -g-
The bucking you felt could be fuel pressure related. I assume you have EFI and not a carb? Everyone remembers the fuel filter that shows on the rail but most don't know about the one hiding in the bottom of the tank selector valve. They are almost ALWAYS black and grungy since no one ever changes them. I couldn't even blow air through mine. The filter is $3 and easy to change though not pinching the gasket when putting it back together is tough so if you can get extra gaskets, do it or else be super careful and holdit in place with a little grease when screwing it back on. Many people on this forum have had performance problems fixed by changing this filter.
RR4e i guess i dont know how to post the pics then. let me know if you have an idea
You'e posted previous pics in the yahoo section just fine. I think you just need to make the Ford ones available to all users. Yahoo has new policies on privacy, and that's likely the problem. I use it as well, and make all my galleries available to all users. Each one seems to require it though. The pics are there, if you can look at them. From there, just make it available to all, rather than requiring special permissions or a password
You're very right about that filter Lee. Once again, very valid post, as well in regards to the vacuum leak. Many people over-look certain things, thinking they have everything done. Over-looking the small things can often lead to other problems that are harder to troubleshoot, as one figures they've covered all the bases. The vacuum leak should be attended to pronto, and a 3 dollar filter is never a miss, regardless of it's condition, just to be sure.
Pick the easy and cheap first, worry about the more expensive later. You might save yourself some serious dollars, and a lot of headaches.
