I bought a 2003 F150 supercab FX4 with a 5.4L Triton. It will crank and crank and never turn over. I will stop and then try again. Sometimes it takes two to three times to finally get the engine to turn over. The dealer ran diagnostics and checked everything and couldn't find anything. Yesterday it cranked and cranked and never turned over. Help
Have you ever tried holding down the throttle a little bit when starting it?
If that helps then you might have an IAC (Idle Air Control) problem.
Another thing you can try is to cycle the key from off to on about 5 times, leaving it in the on position for about 2 seconds at a time. That will build up the fuel pressure more before you start cranking it. If that helps then you might have a bad fuel pump or maybe just a partially plugged filter.
Do you still have warranty on it?
Yes, it is under warranty. The dealer came and picked it up and ran tests. They said it is like your computer at home whenever it has glitches. I don't know if this is a sign of the computer going bad but they reprogrammed it runs better and starts right up. Thanks for your help. Any suggestions on getting the extended warranty for this truck. What is it's track record as far as repairs.
Buying extended warranty is like buying insurance. You hope you never need it but you just never know.
If you're going to buy extended warranty I would only buy the genuine Ford warranty. It's honored at all Ford dealers and usually there are no hassles getting jobs covered like there can be with aftermarket warranties.
Or you can just stick the money you'd be spending on the warranty into the bank and save it just in case you need it. If not then you're money ahead
