pulling power

Does anybody know what the difference in real pulling power would be between a '96 7.3 PSD with a 4.10 and a newer model 7.3 with a 3.73, all other things being equal? Thanks ahead of time.

My friend has a 99 with 3.73 gears, and I have a 97 with 4.10s, when both were stock I got a better hole shot, but he did better in the mid range. It's off the line that you will see the difference. You'll definitely get better fuel mileage on the highway with 3.73 gears in a newer PSD.

How new are we talking about? I would say just the difference in gearing would make the 96 a little better off the line.

I currently have a '96 crewcab, drw, 2wheel drive with a 4.10. Pulling my very large stock trailer, I get around 11 mpg. I can pull it with no problem but it just winds tighter than I like when I get on the interstate. I was just wandering how a newer model (probably 99-02) would handle the trailer if I can ever afford to upgrade. I know the 3.73 would help with the mpg, just didn't know if the extra power on the newer ones would make up for the gear ratio. Thanks.

Yes, I think you should be fine getting a newer 7.3L with the 3.73. You might notice a little difference in how they tow, but if you do a lot of highway towing(interstate and such) you'll be happier with the 3.73. I guess you could also look at a newer truck with a 6 speed with the 4.10, I think the highway rpms are about the same as an auto w/3.73.
