I have a 88 F-150 4x4 autolocking hubs, 4.9l engine. A loud clunking noise came from under the truck and it sound like gears trying to mesh together.
Finally it sounded like something engaged with a loud thump.
Driving forward some more a typing of ticking sound could be heard which sounded like it was coming from the wheels Drove another 25 feet and the truck sounded back to normal.
Anyone ever have this problem and know what it is?
It sounds like your hubs may have been trying to engage/disengage. were you using the 4wheel-drive at the time? the hubs need to be "manually" disengaged after use. this is typically accomplished by stoping, shift T-case to 2wd, and driving in reverse. sometime the ABS will make a clunking-chattering sound too if not all tires have traction when the brake is applied. I hope that helps
i dont want to scare you but those are the same noises that i heard when the pump seized in my t-case on my 91 f150. causing the pump arm to wrap its self around the gear. it stayed in 4wd and busted the rear u-joint going to the front axle. so every time the chain went around that part of the gear... thump. does your 4wd still work? do the noises change with your speed?
I changed my trans fluid the other day and my trans would clunk from a take off. I was about a half quart low on fluid. I put in the half quart and clunk is gone. Clunks also come from shot U-joints. But it usually clunks all the time.
I have a 1993 F-150. I am experiencing a similar problem. It only occurs in 4 wheel drive. When engaged and driving, there is all of a sudden a loud clunking noise. I feels like I am running over a brick!! I inspected the automatic hubs and all u-joints, I don't see anything out of the ordinary. My local repair shop won't even look at it, they thought maybe a problem with the transfer case? Could it be the automatic hubs? Or, maybe the transfer case...the solenoid/switch has been acting up. Help....
