This truck is an XLT, extended cab, 4.0 liter, automatic, 4x4, with 48,000 miles.
My problem is an aggravating "clunk" as it slows to a stop. Its not there when the rigs cold, but after it warms up and in traffic this "clunk" gets to you.
The local Ford dealer acknowledges the problem. They recently had the transmission out, replaced some servos and completely serviced it. They said everything appeared in good shape and tightened everything as much as specs will allow. They also checked the u-joints, but the problem's still there.
The only thing the dealer can tell me is with this drive-train combination and this chassis there is alot of slack. I don't buy it! Its aggravating enough to consider getting rid of the truck. Its too bad because I like the rig otherwise.
sounds just like the same kinda problem I have on my 90 f-150 5.0 Automatic tranny. I have no idea what it is. Thought it might be weak tranny fluid, which thinned down after warming up, but changing the fluid didn't help. also, mine only does it in over-drive, if I run it in drive there is still a little thump, but no big jerk like in OD. I hope somebody knows what this is, because it annoys the hell out of me too!
I DO KNOW THIS ,INCREASE THE LINE PRESURE AND YOU INCREASE THE HARDNESS OF THE SHIFT ESPICALLY ON DOWN SHIFTS, DECREASE THE LINE PRESURE AND THE SHIFT IS SMOTHER AND SOFTER,TOO MUCH AND YOU CAN BLOW A SEAL,AND MORE -- TOO LITTLE SLIPPAGE OFTEN HAPPENS OPP'S -MABY THERE IS A VACUME OR LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT, CHECK THE MANUAL. HOPE IT HELPS.
I had a Taurus (Now I have a Ranger- the Taurus was a hand-me-down) Anyway- I had this annoying clank when i slowed down. Eventually it happened when I started turning. At first, I thought it was the tranny, but when my tie rod end broke, I knew that was the problem- just an idea!
did you get a complete fluid change since you have almost 50k?? also, did you have them check and see if the torque convertor has stuck open? been known to happen on ford's auto trannies.
