Question Intermittant heat

Well the cold weather is here along with a problem with my heat. Here's the problem: It seems as long as the engine is running over about 1500 RPM I have all the heat I could want. But as soon as the engine speed drops, like when I'm stopped at a red light or coasting down a hill, the temperature of the heater air cools right off. Say within about 10 seconds. As soon as I accelerate away, the heat air temp comes right up again... I know I have the factory valve in the heater hose that shuts off the hot water from running through the heater core when the AC is on. That seems to be working OK because I see the vacume close and open it when I turn the AC on and off respectively. Truck seems to be running OK, except what I think is crummy mileage (~15). A few weeks ago I did install a custom made grill cover that blocks about 80% of the air coming through the top grill. Truck heats up fine and temp gauge is about mid scale while all of this is going on. Truck is a 2003 CC4x4 w/ 6.0L Diesel.
Any ideas what else this could be, or what esle I should check?

I hate taking the thing into the dealer and I'm taking it on a trip across country next week so I'm kind of in a hurry.

New Ford heaters ain't what they used to be...

I dunno, I've owned Fords for years. They've always been a cut above when it comes to the amount of heat pushed through the ducts. But the PSD leaves a bit to be wanted. I've got friends with PSD's that complain about the lack of heat. I've been turning the heat all the way up, the fan up too, and then get temps I expected with lower fan flow. It's like the low fan setting doesn't push less hot air, it pushes cooler air. But turn the fan up and I can melt glaciers off the mountains. So normal heat position is about 3/4 instead of 1/2 notch.

But since it doesn't get as cold here as it does in NY, I'm learning to live with what really doesn't seem to be broke. Under designed, but not broke.

Yeah, It doesn't matter if the fan is on high or low, and any setting except AC or MAX AC and it behaves the same way. If the engine is running faster the heat will raise a blister on your hand, let it idle for 10 seconds and it's cool, not as cold as outside though.

Sorry you guys are having heat problems...Mine works great. I live only 3- 4 miles from the office. Let her warm up about 5 - 10 minutes and I'm good to go. By the time I get out of the alley I have heat.

Of course we don't have too many cold days here but it will be 25 F the next couple of mornings.

FYI: The heat issues you describe are the opposite of some of the cooling issues some have had in the summer. At idle, vent temp would go up after only a few seconds at a red light. I still have a temp gauge in my vent even though a flash fixed my problem last summer.

In addition, it seems my EGR valve can never stay plugged. (little bugger) and i personally feel that that had an impact on my cooling enhancements also. Although I cannot explain why.

Keep warm.

Thanks Tim, I've been a lurker for a few years and gotten a ton of great info. Do you know if the heater air flow is directed by vacuum or electrically controlled selonoids? My dealer has done a bunch of work under my dash (radio static related) and maybe a wire or line got unhooked by accident when they were under there. If it's not related to that somehow, I'm thinking I must have a bad thermostat.

Does your temp gage on the dash drop when you pull to a stop....IMO the only way you could be getting cold air is through am air door not working ....the thermostat really would not have anything to do with this issue....becasue of the instant cold you re feeling..you are on to the correct track about up under the dash...

Temp gauge is steady at mid range. Does not move while this is going on.

Well I think I answered my own question. Tonight I looked a little further into the problem and found no antifreeze in the fill bottle. I added almost 2 gallons of the new prestone "all makes all models" antifreeze and h20. Now my question is where did my antifreeze go? I do have some residue around the overflow/filler cap, but not enough for what I think it would look like to loose 2 gallons of fluid. I don't find any on the ground under the truck and I changed the oil this w/e and that looked normal too.

This is not going in the direction we would like it to go.....need to watch it real close...two gallons is a lot to misplace....is there any other over spray residue on the bottom side of the truck…anywhere. That antifreeze has a propensity to leave a nasty white spot on anything it touches…

ut-oh this is not good! I was going to comment on the thermostat question till I saw your previous post. Have you noticed a odd smell in the cab?

Wasn't there once a post by someone who had their coolent being forced out by a bad intercooler or something like that? High pressure air was forced into the cooling system and out went the liquid.

Can't recall at the moment who it was.

No antifreeze smell inside or outside the cab. I do have a small drip in the waterpump area but never big enough to drip to the driveway.
