Question 1995 E150 Conversion van trans-cooler......

I don't know if this tranmission cooler is Ford factory installed unit or if it is part of the Tuscany Conversion package. The problem is that the two rubber lines going in/out of the cooler are leaking. They are only about 6" long with "push lock type" ends at the hard lines and just regular old worm-drive hose clamps at the cooler in/out nipples. Is this normal mounting proceedure for the cooler lines? I removed the front grille for access and tightened the worm-drive hose clamps at the cooler that were considerably loose. It was using/loosing about a quart of fluid every 5-600 miles on a recent 4000 mile trip. Are these 6" rubber hoses available at parts counters? Thanks for any assistance.

An OE aux trans cooler has no rubber lines running in/out of it. They are all steel. You can tell the OE cooler as it is mounted in the upper right corner of the grill (when viewed from the front of the van) and is painted black. It is mounted on very factory looking metal brackets and has nicely formed steel lines in/out.

If yours is a bare aluminum cooler mounted to the radiator, it is for sure an aftermarket cooler. Either way the rubber lines can be bought at most autoparts stores but you MUST specify transmission cooler line. Fuel line or heater hose will quickly fail.

Thumbs down Tranny cooler....

Steve,
Thanks for your reply! The cooler is as you described...at the upper driverside in front of the condensor/radiator and is painted black. Maybe, being as this is a Tuscany conversion van, it is part of the conversion package and they just didn't run hard lines all the way to the cooler. I removed the plastic grille and with better access to the hose clamps I got them tightened. Not leaking so far. The rubber hoses appear to have those connectors that need the little "Push" collar like gadget to release from the hard lines. Are these hoses available with just one fitting like I have or should I just get plain hose and use new hose clamps? Is there substantial line pressure at the cooler that the regular hose clamps can handle? Thanks again.

Regular hose clamps will work if there is a flare to retain the line so it won't pop off. That does sound like an OE cooler. Mine has no rubber lines but there are others that I have seen that do. If you want to retain the OE connectors you should get the lines from the Ford dealer.
