87-89
I have had quite a few Ford vehicles and not a one of them ran that great on 87. 1985 F150 351 HO, 1989 Mustang LX 2.3, 1995 F150 4.9, 1995 F150 5.0. All of these would ping when running 87 with the a/c on while driving on the highway. So, I don't run 87 in anything I care about.

My 91 5.0 runs okay on 87 if I run some fuel system cleaner on a regular basis. If I dont, it will knock under a load such as hills. If 89, I dont have much of a problem.

I run 89 octane in my F350 99% of the time and have no problems with pinging. It does ping sometimes when I run 87 in it. All our Fords (8 in all ranging from '92-2000), my '87 Dodge, and our old '97 Chevy van ping on 87. 89 works much better.

i backed my timing down 2 hairs and it quit pinging on regular. and i figured up that with suer being only 20 cents a gallon more exensive, it only costs you 6 dollars extra if you buy 30 gallons. just some often overlooked info. its not that bad on your wallet to get the good stuff. and i believe firmly in running exxon gas! once had a 4-wheeler that wouldn't run on anything but exxon...?? i dunno. im a believer.
