Hopefully someone here can help out. Purchased and just recieved a Ford Motorcraft reman steering gear box from a seller on ebay (yes I know it is risky proposition!). They have hundreds of feedback comments with 99.3% being positive. The box is for my 1991 F150. UPS driver dropped it off while I was away from the house. Anyway, the part looks nice and in great shape.
The problem is that I cannot turn the output shaft by hand. I looked at another gear box at a local Auto Zone and was able to freely turn the output shaft by hand. The sector shaft adjustment screw isn't slotted at the top. So my questions are:
1) What can I do to make the output shaft turn freely enough?
2) Do I need to replace the sector shaft with one that is slotted or could a double (jam) nut procedure be used if adjusting/loosening it is all I need to do get the output shaft to turn by hand?
3) Could the part have been damaged during shipping? It is heavy and could have been dropped, possibly knocking something out of wack!
I will accept all admonishments comming to me about my choice of purchase.
Thanks, Ed

I just bought one from Autozone on my Bronco about a week ago. I could not turn it with my hand either, but once I put it in my truck I had no problems. I am not sure about the adjustment. It is nice to see someone else here from Vegas, don't think I have seen your truck around yet.
Thanks for the reply kameronth. Just wanted to hear from others if this was a common thing. Hopefully when I install it I will have the same results as you.
I am on the soutwest side of the city, around 215 and Durango. Take a look at my gallery. My truck still looks the same but without the cap. I sold the cap and installed a used Snug Top fiberglass lid. The custom hood is currently off the truck for now and the stock one is in its place. Still have the custom bumper on it, along with the Belltech rear roll pan; both are in need of repair after being rear ended, backed into, and storm damage. She's in need of a paint job too
Wow, alot has happened to your truck! What kind of storm damage? Rain? I am just about as far North East of the valley as you can get, Lakemead and Hollywood area. Check out my truck in my gallery, you might have seen me speeding around. That is a sweet hood!

Storm damage was from a super typhoon that slammed into the island of Guam (USA) where I resided prior to moving to Vegas. Someones tin roof blew off and tore up the roll pan. I haven't gotten around to repairing it yet. I plan on relocating the front bumper lights a little further apart to make room for the (state required) front license plate. I also plan on making a fiberglass replica of the custom hood; the inner support frame is done. Got to get it all mechanically squared away before doing anything cosmetic. It's my daily driver to and from work.
BTW, nice truck. Wish I had a place like the one in your gallery to work on my truck. Are you or did you watch Overhaulin tonight. Foose and company did a Fastback Mustang here in Vegas during SEMA--that is one SICK ride! Wish they found my truck to ovehaul though!
Ed, the steering box party is above in the 67-72 forum. The previous owner may have cranked down on the adjuster. Bushing ok on the output shaft? Seals need replacing? You don't want to install it twice. Meridian in southen Calif have a very high quality exchange/rebuild facility. Readjust before installing. You stated you can't turn the ouput shaft, it takes some force on the pitman arm to do that because of some preload and the gear ratio of the box. Whats important is imput shaft torque. Carl.....o&o>........
Carl, thanks for the reply. The gear box is supposedly a NIB reman unit from Ford Motorcraft. Seller says that the part is a "recovered frieght" item that they inspected for obvious damage prior to selling it on ebay.
How can I tell if the bushings are ok, or that the seals need replacing. I would think that they were all repalced during the reman process.
Should I check the input shaft torque prior to installing it onto the truck? If so how?
After reading the response from kameronth, I am figuring that turning the shafts by hand on a new unit is not neccessarily a common thing. And it is possibly not a good thing since it would probably mean that the input torque would be way too low.
Now that I think about it, I think that the input shaft does move a tiny bit when turning it by hand. I'll have to check it out latter.
