Ok, ive replaced the starter, starter silenoid, wire from starter to silenoid, wire going to battery+,wire's,and push on clip wire's on the back of the brand new altenator to the silenoid, and the voltage regulator, and that plug as well, and the problem I have, and still have is the charging system is only working once, and a while instead of all the time.So some time's the 79 Bronco 400M will not start becouse of dead battery(brand new Interstate 1000cca).It only leave's me hanging once in a while when it won't start.Ive had 3 back surgery's so walking is not my strong suit. Will a bad key switch have anything to do with this??Once in a while it is hard to get the key to turn due to worn out key. It's wierd couse the key switch only mess's with me when it's cold out.Once it's past the lock position where the key can be pulled out it turn's fine.Weird eah?
Do you have a volt gauge or a dummy light on your dash? If you don't have a gauge, you may consider installing one. That way, you can see if it's a charging problem or a voltage drain somewhere in the system. I had a truck that wouldn't hold a charge and it turned out to be a bad horn relay. Also, it wouldn't hurt to replace your ignition switch. It may have a bad contact that isn't completing the charging circuit. Good luck. Electrical problems are always a PITA.
It has a OEM volt. gage that work's when it's charging. This is a once, and a while problem.I drove it all day yesterday after a jump, and all day today, and the guage say's it's charging.Like if I turn the heater on full bored, and light's at the same time the guage will move taward's charging for a few minute's,and then back to just maintaning the battery.Weird.Like I said this is a once in a while problem.PITA is 100% right.
It may just be a bad terminal in your ignition switch. Those are cheap enough to replace.
You can check for a slow drain on the battery by removing a battery terminal (with the key off) and hooking a test light to that terminal and putting the probe on the battery post. If it lights up, you have a drain somewhere. Good luck.
That's been done already. No drain's or im not getting the right result becouse the charging system might of been working when we did the drain test.I will throw on another voltage regulator, and plug on,and replace the key switch tomarow.it's been charging for the past couple of day's,but their is still that once, and a while that get's me wound for sound.I now have a 900amp. boost box that ride's along with the Bronco.(LOL)
I bought the Bronco 5-6 yr.'s ago,and the previuse owner was a older man who was on top of maintance, and "EVERYTHING" is the way it was from Ford other then the 400 transplant, but all wiring is untouched, and still in all oem clip's holding it nice, and pretty as it was in 79.im a hopping the key switch is the answer.
