Right now Im in the market for a new exhaust system (just a catback). Ive been looking around this forum and it seems to me that Gibson "super truck" exhaust would be my top choice; a mild tone and the most power gains. I like the form follow function train of thought. So now that Ive decided on the muffler Im debating on whether I should bring my truck in to a muffler shop to have it installed or do it myself? Are there any drawbacks or noticeable differences between the two options?
and also, someone correct me if Im wrong on my outlook on Gibson.
If you are handy, DIY....they are really easy to do.....I did my dad's F150 and it was a snap.....and just to challenge myself I did headers, ypipe, muffler and tailpipe on my Super Duty V10. As far as Gibson goes.....some have said that can't tell the difference over stock......I don't have anything gibson so other will chime in I hope.
Now did you order everything as a kit or did you just get the headers and muffler and pipe and put it together.
I"m wondering can you just do this, because it would be a lot cheaper for me if I could.
I baught the Banks powerpack kit. It came with all the components. The instructions were perfect (except for one heatshield). You have to have the energy and nuggets to do something like this. With some help from my dad, it took me two full weekend days. It all was straight forward and I got lucky with the manifold studs.....none of my broke off which can happen. The worst part of the whole operation was torquing the headers. With the V10 having 5 pipes per side.......it was a challange to get them all tight. I needed universals and multi extensions to get to them all. But I did it and 6 month and 15k miles later......still good.
I hear you about being cheaper to do it yourself....the Fod dealer.....YES MY FORD DEALER......sells and installs Banks kits on trucks, and they even will chip it for you. They wanted $1200 to install it. My kit cost $1500. I did it myself and saved $1200.
