Exclamation Cps ??

I'm new to diesel and read that the CPS valve would cause the veh to not start etc and that I should carry a spare one..
Well and good but where does it go and how hard are they to replace ??

CPS is cam position sensor. Its located at about 10 o'clock if your looking at the crank shaft from the front.

One bolt holds it in. It has a pig tail w/a plug.

My C.P.S. on my 2002 was just replaced under the 3/36 warranty last week with 34,000 miles. I'll be adding one to my glovebox also.

The cps is located just above the crank pulley at the ten oclock positon. It is connected to the timing marker and has a pigtail with two wires connected to it. I can't remember for sure but the bolt takes a 10 or 12mm socket. It's and easy fix that I accomplished in ten minutes, plus the hour it took to get one.

If you get one, buy it at the international dealer, ford will charge you roughly 75 bucks more for it. I have seen 2 types of failures, intermitent, and full on. Sometimes the truck will die, but restart just fine. Others it will die and you are done. You can easily tell if it quit, the tach will not respond when cranking the vehicle.

My local Ford dealer price was $141.00.

One thing to watch, if your truck wont start once you shut it off and the tach doesn't move, make sure your batteries are charged before you spend the money for the cps. Almost made that mistake last winter.

I think it is pretty sorry that Ford can't fix this problem. As yet I don't have a problem. I feel that having to carry around a $100 part is rediculous. I will probably just fly without it as long as the 100K warranty is in effect. I have free towing and the deductable will cover the part. Once the warranty is up I guess I will carry one around. Why do some fail and others don't? Very strange.
