Hey there! I have a 94 Splash 4.0L, and has been modified with the following: K&N cone air filter, Vortec 73mm mass air (24LB tube), 63mm throttle body, 24LB injectors, Jet module, 2 1/2 inch short tube Flowmaster 2 stage exhaust. I have maintained my truck religiously, only the best. A few months back I would get valve knock after the truck has warmed up under load. At steady speed and idle, all is quiet. I replaced a 6 year old Hypertech module, a home made mass air, and added 24LB injectors. The intake is clean, having an engine fog done, a complete tune up, and new O2's. It has 104,000 on the odometer, but runs like new. I baby my baby. Can anyone suggest a solution to this valve knock?? If you need more info, please e'mail me. Many thanks!!
Yates
By "valve knock" I am assuming you mean deatonation under a heavy load (full throttle acceleration in any gear). I too have a 94 Ranger 4.0L 5 sp. 2 wheel drive bone stock, that knocks on regular unleaded fuel. There are no codes in the computer and this truck doesn't have a knock sensor. I bought this truck new, it has 83,000 miles on it and has been getting steadily worse as time goes on. I have abated this problem by running 92 or 93 octane fuel but I'd like to save some money by running regular unleaded fuel. If anybody has any ideas about why this is happening and what to do about it, I'd be interested in hearing from you.
The 91-93 2.3L,s have an "octane plug" located on the passenger side of firewall, coming out of the wire loom. When this plug is removed, the timing is reduced 2-3 degrees, allowing for use of lower octane fuel without pinging. I don't know if your models are equipped with this, but it might be worth a look.
