Driving my Van last night and the headlights shut down. I have DRL and the highbeam will work if I pull the lever to flash. The rear running lights operate as well . Any help would be appreciated, I don't have a manual and the closest dealer/garage is over an hours drive (Northern Alberta). The days are short here , to get to Alaska you head West,I really need the lights so the Moose don't slip on the ice.

Sounds like dimmer switch to me. Dont know what year van you have, but some years go out to lunch before others.Other than that could be switch or relays.
I agree, my 90 blew out both low beams when the dimmer switch went out. I didnot know the switch was out until I replaced the headlights and they blew again in about a week, thats when I replaced the switch and they have worked good sence.
My Van is a 93, I just remembered an incident that happened about a year ago, the column shifter broke and I had it replaced with a used one. "Ever Since" then , the cruise control has droped out for no apparent reason every so often and the intermittent wipers are no longer working as advertised. Coincidence, probably not , I have a feeling the harness was pinched when the work was done causing my latest problem. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction and jogging my memory as poor as it is.
Mine started with a different problem. My headlight switch burnt out. I had to replace the connector behind the switch. Now my headlights blink on and off. I think my high beams are gone completely. I have to pull back on the switch to have any light when they go out. I also can jiggle the dimmer lever and get them to come back on temporarily. Where is the switch located? Is it at the base of the dimmer lever or is it at the bottom of the column?
The dimmer/turn sig. switch is at the base of the arm and is not to hard to replace. Pull the steering wheel and the collumn cover and it is rigth there.
Question for all who have placed the relay system to use in their headlight system. Do any of you remember the part number of the bosch relay or the part number of the radio shack relay used? I am trying to keep from having to change the light switch in the future by taking care of it today.
As I mentioned in response to your PM, I do not know the part number for Bosch's or Radio Shack's relays. The Bosch may be more convenient than the one from Radio Shack, as it comes with a fuse holder and fuse. Radio Shack only has the one model of high current automotive relay, so it should be pretty easy to find. It is a 1 cubic inch black plastic box with a mounting tab on one end and spade connectors comming out the other end (just like the Bosch model). Its contacts are rated at 30 amps, and it is driven by 12 volts, like most automotive electrical parts.
