Ya know, I knew it was coming, but I'm not ready for this. Our 6 year old mutt (lab and pit mix) "Scooby" is on his last leg. Scoob was diagnosed with Lymphoma about 2 months ago. He's hung on bravely, but I have to take him back to the vet this morning. I fear this is it.
Scoob is really my daughter's dog, a Christmas present from "Santa". He quickly became the family dog, with no questions from my sweetie.
At least we all got to prepare for this day......Man I'm sick inside. I know its the right thing to do, but it really stinks.
I'm very sorry for you and your family's pain. I have two dogs and couldn't bare losing either of them. Here is how I look at putting them down. A dog's life is the family that raises it. He hates being away from you to the point that it pains him. If you have to put him down, please for his sake, hold him so that he is not lonely. The comfort and security of your arms around him will sooth his pain and calm his fear. He trusts you. He will pass knowing that you were with him when it mattered and didn't leave him to face it alone with a complete stranger. It will be hard on you but you'll feel better about it in the end. I only had to put one dog down and I held her. When she went under I cried for 15 minutes but it was closure. Good Luck.
Sorry to hear that. I had to put down one of our dogs last year. We had him for 11 years. (That was longer than we had our kids!) It was pretty hard, but now we have 3 dogs (had 1, got 2 more).
Thanks GotLift, Thats what I'm planning on doin. Just got off the phone with the Vets office. We are going at 10:30 this morning. Just me and the Scoobster. The wife wants to go also, but I think it will be just me......I'm so shook up I couldn't even tell the receptionist my phone number.
I know its the right thing to do. Its just so damn hard.....
Its not sappy my friend, its what you feel for a family member
Sorry to hear about your dog. Having to put our pets down is one of the hardest things to do. We had to put our family dog of 11 years down earlier this year. Held her when they gave her the shot. It was tough but as the pack leader you have to be there in the end for them. We had her cremated and the vet clinic sent us a card with her paw print on it-kind of nice. take care
We (my wife and I) under stand all to well your pain! We have lost 4 dogs and one cat in the last few years. 2 were CA, 1 by age, 1 from liver d. and a cat from FIP. All were very well loved and missed.
I had a dog that I should have put down a couple of years ago. I kept thinking that maybe there was some hope, that he was gonna get better so I kept putting it off. That was the worst thing I could have done for him. He was a Lab/chow mix and an awesome "kid" dog.
Anyway, I ended up staying up with him all night, he laid his head in my lap the whole night, moving only to lick my hand occaisionally. Eventually, at about 6:30, he took his last breath. It was very hard for me and my family. We talked about it later and all of us, including the kids, agreed that we should have taken him in two months earlier and had him put down.
Don't mean to steal you thread, I just wanted you to know that you are doing what is best if you friend is incurrable. I assume by now you have already been to the vet so I will say that I am sorry for your loss. Only animal lovers can understand the bond between you and your pet.
I feel your pain Reever!! Just 6 month ago we had to put our peanut down, she was a 13 year old golden retriever... I had her before I had my wife or son... Tore me up! I sat in my truck and cried for at least 15 minutes... Best thing to do is be there with scoob when it happens and always remember him
I've got two dogs right now, both cocker spaniels, I'm 18 and one of them is just as old as i am! We have had him the past 6 years, but my stepmom has had him longer than that, at least another 8-10 before that. He's really starting to show his age. We don't know how much he has left in him. He isn't lying around all that much, he is up and around all the time, so I dunno, I've never met a dog that has lived that long. The other one is about 7-8 and she is the sweetest thing in the world, thats my dog there. Ever since I left for college, my family has said she hasn't been the same and whenever I come back she goes nuts. I dunno what I would do without them. I know we are fixing to lose one, I don't know how soon though. I'm sorry for your loss, but if thats the best thing to do, then it needs to be done.
I just wanted to say Thank-You to all who responded to my post. It was an extremely difficult morning, and as usual the FTE folks made things easier.
The "Scoobster" went out like the great dog that he was. Nary a whimper or a complaint. Just a little sigh when the Doc gave him the anesthesia shot, licked my face a bit, then the "Big Shot" and that was it.
Needless to say, I was bawling like a baby. The Doc and his 2 assistants weren't much better. It takes a special kind of person to deal with animals, and my Vet and his staff are the best.
The family is doin OK so far. My daughter (12) is taking it very well. She knew Scooby was really sick and this was for the best. My 2 grown sons (18 & 20) are really taking this hard. So's their old man. The wife is doing her best, but it will hit her in the morning when theres no dog to let out. We'll get through this I'm sure.
Anyways, thanks again. Just to let this out is part of the process. Thanks FTE.
Sorry to hear about this reever... especially this time of year. I hope your family gets past this as quickly and easily as possible and that you know you can talk to us about it if it helps. We're here for you, reever.
Man that sucks! My dog got out of the fence and was run over about 2 yrs ago, at least I didn't see it, and by the time I got word from my neighbor the body had been picked up already. Then I got a puppy about a month later, turned out it was already sick with parvo and died the next day. I almost didn't want to get another dog, but you really gotta have one, just too much fun! I finally got another puppy and that was 1 1/5 yrs ago. Now I have a big spoiled couch potato! That's her as my avatar!
Reever, Glad to hear that Scooby was brave. Sorry for your loss, but he isn't hurting anymore. You sound like a guy who deserves the companionship of a dog. There are so many people who should never own a dog. When you and your family get through the tough weeks, there will be another dog that will be lucky to be yours. Good Luck.
