steering linkage

I have a 1997 f250 HEAVY DUTY 4X4, 351 ENGINE, FULL SIZE WITH EXTENDED CAB. I tried to have it inspected and the mechanic told me there was a problem with the steering shaft. (HAS SOME PLAY). I checked it myself and it has a split type shaft, it does move side to side a good half an inch. Once in a while I do hear a clunking and I think it is from that. My front end is in good shape so I know it is not from that. I have another shaft that I bought but it is from a 1996 f150 and the man said that it would fit. there is a difference with the end of the shaft that connects to the steering box. The one on the truck now has a coupling with a rubber piece in it and the one I bought does not. The one I bought has a plain universal type joint on both ends. Does anyone know if this will work, or do I need the same type that is on it. Thanks Matt L.

As long as the length fits, the new one bolts up, and the u-joints are still good, I don't see a problem with using the 'new' shaft.

Thanks for your input, I did check with my local ford dealer he said I should not have a problem. Matt L,
