Transmission problem 92 Ranger
The car has a 5 speed manual transmission.The car won't go into reverse or first. The car has to be turned off before it can be shifted. Mechanic told me I needed a new transmission and it costs about $2200. Any other solutions to try first? He said the problem was people driving their trucks in overdrive at low speeds in town. Hurts lubrication.

Before you replace your entire transmission, have your mechanic check if the clutch slave cylinder is going out. The slave cylinder on my F-150 went out 2 months ago. The clutch pedal started to squeak a few months before it went out, and shifting in and out of gear became more difficult. When it went out, the truck would not shift in and out of gear without turning off the engine. After it was fixed, the transmission shifted smooth as butter. You could also check and see if your clutch and throwout bearing are going out. Even if the transmission is bad, you could probably get one out of a scrapyard for way less than $2000.00.
