I was driving my 86 ford f150 today and the brakes just cut out the only brakes i had were the rear because they are drum but the pedal went all the way to the floor.. I only use the truck for the woods and running back and forth to work it has 196000 miles on it and a 5.0 engine with fuel inj. I just wondering if anyone else had this problem
I am not to clear on what you said. did you mean that the only brakes you did have were the rear, and they gave out, or did you mean that all the brakes were working and the front gave out. Or did you mean that all the brakes were working, and then they all gave out and you used the parking brake to stop.
No matter wich one it is I would say check your brake fluid (If not already done), you could have developed a leak in the line.
Also If your brakes wore down too much, or a roder (or drum) was cut too thinn you could have hade a cylinder explode, meaning that the piston moved to far and came out of the cylinder cousing you to loose all fluid.

The brakes were working fine than the just went out the only brake i had were the rear, but the pedal went all the way to the floor ands i had no front brakes.. I checked the fluid and it was full, checked all the lines for leaks and there was none. It only did it once and now it seems like there is nothing wrong.. I do use the truck for the woods so that is where it spends most of its time.. I an just wondering if it just got air in the system or what happend it has never happend before and has not happend again..
I think I know What you mean. My dads car has a hydrolic clutch and as I was going down the road the clutch pedal gave out, I pull into a gas station and it started working again. I thought it was an air bubble, so i made a mark on the master cylinder were the fluid level was and waited for it to happen again. Sure enough second time it happend the fluid level was a little low, I topped it off and it hasn't happend since.
So I would say keep an eye on the level and wait for it to happen again (it might not), but if it happens more than just a second time you should bleed the system. otherwise leave it.
How long since you last bled the system? Brake fluid, by nature, absorbs water, becomes discolored, and will not respond as well after a period of use. For an average driver, brake fluid should be bled through at least once a year to keep the system working properly. For someone who does a lot of heavy use/abuse driving, or drives a lot in the rain/high humidity, more often is a good idea.(will vary on your driving style, heavy load situations, off-roading/river running, etc)
I mostly use the truck for off road driving since i do a lot of hunting.. My father has had the truck since brand new in 86 and he just gave it to me this year since i cant take my 04 king ranch sd 6.0 in the woods (its just too nice) I will try changing the fluid and re bleading the system.. Thanks for all the help..
