I have an 88 f250 with a 5.8 and the zf 5 spd, for the past few months it's been making a buzz/wining noise that can be heard right after it's shut off, I'm pretty sure the noise is vacuum related as it fades out in about 15-30seconds. The noise is coming from the EVR, it doesn't matter if the truck is hot, or cold and it may or not be making the noise when running. Do I need a new EVR? I haven't checked for codes yet, but I have never seen the check engine light come on during operation.
i'd say if it ain't hurting ya. leave it alone. esecially if its expensive. it could also be something to do with brakes. if you shut the truck off and wait a minute or so, does the brake still feel like the booster is working good? what is evr? did you mean egr? are you sure its comimng from there?
Well, the truck isn't running great, but it's ok. On the drivers side, next to the coil, the three things with power and vacuum going to them, the one furthest forward(mine has a grey top) is the evr, or so i'm told. It is definately this thing, the brake booster is fine, and i can feel a vibration from the evr as i hear the noise.
My truck does this as well. My friends 99 Expedition 5.4L also makes this exact same noise... It sounds like it is just ever so slowly closing when vac is lost when you shut the truck off.
It's normal, it stores vacuum in the top of it to actuate the EGR valve, when you shut the engine off it releases the vaccum, making the noise. I wouldn't worry about it.
