i knew if i praised my truck i would curse myself! cause less than 24 hrs later the power locks will open the door locks but not close them...# 12 20amp fuse seems fine as my lumbar pump is workin and 4x4 da da da....i do have an older alpine alarm sytem on the truck but this seems like a relay issue to me?..any ideas? where is the relay for the power locks?
thanks
What year is your truck? Did it originaly have keyless entry? Do the switches on the door work both ways, or is it only when you use your alarm. or both? Check both doors?
97 as stated in signature, no factory keyless remote, switches on both doors open the locks, will not close door locks, and wont close either with alarm remote but will open and yes i checked both doors...go figure
Easy killer, I've worked in a stereo shop for 10 years I'm an Alpine dealer, and I have an alarm w/keyless entry, remote start, window roll-up & down installed on a 97. I had no idea you had a signature or what it was until now. Because your truck didn't have keyless entry, the installer had to use two relays to provide voltage reversal to the actuators. When he did that he interupted the wires between the switch and the actuator. You will find two relays probably taped side by side near the alarm I bet the power wire came off one of those relays. I asked those stupid questions because you would be suprised how many *******es call a stereo shop and haven't checked the switches or both doors.
hey seems i got the right guy...makes sense though.....good timing to screw up cause i have to take it in and have the new remotes programmed i bought (replacements cause the old ones have no range left in them due to wear and tear) so it should be obviuos like u say to the people who originally installed it...thanks bud
really appreciate your expertise on that...
You are more than welcome my friend. What model alarm? Generally transmiters don't lose range because of age. Try buying 1 new trans first. If you haven't priced them, you will be suprised how expensive they are. You can also order new cases for your transmiters if just the plastic is broken.
oops missed the part about you already purchased remotes. Sorry, I'll shut up now. Oh yeah, never praise your 97. Happens to me everytime I brag about how great it runs!
hey...i finnally got roud to taking the dash apart (cause spring came early) and noticed w/a volt meter and just looking that everything was intact...i then took the panels off the doors and thorougly sprayed the mechanics and it worked!...saved myself some money and lubed up everything that needed it ...
ya i bought the remotes cuase they have been abused because of constant dropping in water and and dirt from living where there is a lot of dirt...the boards inside were degraded from exposer to water and eventually lost there range due to that...i just thought it was a good idea that i get some b4 they were obsolete...i noticed the new ones are much more suppirior so i think it was a good move...i just cant program them cause i cant read the codes even with a magnifiying glass...so i have to go in and have them professionnaly done...SOON
thanks again anyway...i learned something from your help!
Relays are on the firewall behind radio , there are three relays in block, check them all pwr locks relay is one toward passenger side. I replaced works great
Pwr locks just started fading on my '00 Excursion and your replies offer hope. I don't have an alarm, but have keyless entry and remotes and neither they, nor the driver or passenger switch will open all or close all the locks.... all the above will usually lock and unlock the driver side and rear window but not the passenger or 2nd row doors. Isn't the Exc enough like the S/D for me to suspect the relay(s). If so, would I look in the same place?
Yes , I would check these relays, I think your truck shares many parts from the f250
Also check the big fuses in the engine compartment make sure they are in place and other fuses good too. I started sharing fuses and figured out 2 hours later more than one fuse controlled locks.
i think cause i only used the remotes and never used the key on the door the mechanism rusted up and seized in side so i would check that first ...it started to work a little bit just spraying the key holes and working them with the key and inside the door where the door grabs the bolt..then i took the panels off and greased everything...works great now!
I have a 2000 Ford F250 Dielsel. Generally been pleased with everything on the vehicle. Recently the power locks stopped working occassionally. I suspected the keyless remote but it acts the same from the buttons on the door. It is happening to all the doors, sometimes it locks them but does not unlock and other times the reverse. I checked all the fuses (inside and out) and all looks good. I suspect a relay is bad but do not want to start wasting money. Any thoughts on process of elimination? Thanks in advance.
americansam, do a search for 'Cuinak' dated 9/23/04. He posted an enhanced replacement procedure for the door lock actuators. See his gallery for a photo guide. This appears to be the problem with my '00 X, but only two are malfunctioning so far so I've decided to watch the others for a while before replacing , but the procedure looks easy and would save $$$.
