My truck started to smoke alot on cold start. I though it was because of the single digits in temp lately. Friday I am driving up I-70 to go shooting (6% grade) and my boost guage pegs at 35psi and I hear a loud pop. I think the hose has blown off so I start to pull over. There is a car coming up quick so I floor it to try to get out of the way and my boost needle pegs at 35 psi again and then a bunch of noise starts coming out from under the hood. It sounded like a bunch of loud coughs. I keep going for a few miles and then a give it some go pedal and everything is working fine. A few miles down the road its starts to happen again this time I can't get any boost higher than 15psi. On the way home it dosn't happen again but my boost is all over the guage and the needle bounces like there is a leak. I checked all the hoses and they are still on and tight. I just changed oil last week to 10w-30 for the winter. The only other thing that I had to take back for was the rear main leak. I am taking it in on Monday but I don't want to hear that the new flash will cure the problems. Any ideas? I only have about 9400 miles on the truck to far.
Is this an 05 psd? There are some issues with the 05's where the larger egr valve Ford has installed may be opening too often at low speeds under a load. Mine makes a chirping sound and cuts out simultaneously ascending grades at low speeds (55-60). I have found that stepping on the accelerator makes it go away. Ford is aware and working on the problem and should have an answer on that soon, I hope.
mscales, check for wire chafing. Do a search on the forum. There used to be a bunch of pics showing where the wire chafing will occur. It causes erratic cut outs as your describing. I would definitely get it to the dealer.
I talked to the diesel tech today and he said that the turbo needs to be replaced. He said the ring inside the turbo that controls the pitch of the blades is sticking. I asked about the egr and the wire chaffing and he said that they checked out fine. He said that the problem that I have with my turbo will cause all the issues that I talked about in my first post. One thing that he told me that I have not read before was that the turbo problem that my truck has will cause the diesel noise to calm down to the point that you swear there is a gas motor in the truck. Anybody else hear of this before.
