I have seen many many posts on the internet about the 4X4 not engaging. I have a 94 Ranger and I have this problem also. One thing I have not seen is how to check the actual button. Is it safe to assume that if there is power prior to the button but nothing after the button,(while it is being pushed), that the problem is the button itself. Or is there anything else between the button and the ECM that will negate any reading after the button while the button is OK. If it matters, I have manual locking hubs

The shift motor seems to get crudded up and you get that same issue. Check your Haynes manual (you will want one now) and follow the steps to cleaning the motor...it will tell you how to shift manually as well!
I have a Haynes and tried it all. I moved the motor and transfer case by hand. I replaced the motor with one I knew worked and replaced the button. Same result. My next step is to replace the ESC module. The interesting part is that even with the new button, I am still not getting any readings after the button though II do prior to the button. Normal electronics would suggest that nothing is getting past the button. Even if the motor or transfer case is bad, I should get juice after the button.
