I regret to sound so ignorant... recently purchased 93 ranger (posted before on the blown head gasket), I am currently traveling due to work and the only "wrenching" I can do on the truck is gather info regarding it. The vehicle has the 2.3 4cly in it, in my net search for info, most all info I gather regarding the engine is back to late 80's mustang/other car to 92 same. Are the engines all the same basic design?? Is this another case of the "leftover engines to go into the trucks" such as my 61 PU with the Yblock?? My intent is to gather parts while I able via net so I can immediatly jump on the motor upon my return. Any advice regarding engine id, cross parting, and general motor nuances would most appreciated.
One specific q: were all these motors built with the duel spark systems??? Or is special id/year motor to diferentiate???
Im, your 93 engine is the same one that Ford put in the 91-93 Mustangs. They put out a few more h.p. than the earlier 2.3's. It's the same basic block that has been around since the 70's (If you remember the 70's, you weren't there)The dual plugs give a more uniform combustion;, more power and less emissions. One word of warning. Ford put these engines (91-93) together with a silicone sealer gasket on the oil pans, which deteriorates over time and clogs up the oil pump pick-up screen. Just keep an eye on the oil pressure gauge. IMHO, these engines are one of the best that Ford ever built. Good luck with yours. Don

thanks very much for the reply on this thread (and my other one as well)... this was the exact background info I needed. I remember reading another post (somewhere) that this engine was noted for blowing head gaskets.. is this something that you can comment on?? Should I use a higher performance head gasket on my rebuild?? Thanks again.
J, I have read other posts about bad head gaskets on the 2.3. However, I have owned 4 of these engines in different vehicles over the years, and never had a head gasket problem. My current 2.3 is in a 92 Mustang and has 108K on it. Absolutely no problems with it except 2 O2 sensors, and a clogged oil pump screen at 95K. I think a lot of head gasket trouble is because of corrosion from the coolant, which can be eliminated by changing anti-freeze regularly, and maybe using a rust inhibitor in radiator. (Gasket will rust through on water jacket side, rather than being blown out from cylinder) No special head gasket is required on a stock head, just use a quality brand name, and torque to specs.
I know you will probably do this anyway, but be sure and put a new timing belt on. Some people have gotten as much as 150K out of them, but I like to change them around 80-90K, because they will break at most inopportune time. Later, Don

Thanks again for your advice and diplomacy. hardest part for me now is having to wait until I can actually start wrenching. I have a month plus to receive (often conflicting) more information.
THE 2.3 IS AN OLD WORKHORSE, RELIABLE AS THE SUN. THE 2.3 TS(TWIN SPARK) STARTED IN THE U.S. IN 1989. MUSTANG PARTS ARE INTERCHANGEABLE. OIL PICKUP PROBLEM EXPERIENCED BY ME AT 153K. I HAVEN'T OPENED THE ENGINE UP FOR ANYTHING .......YET. FACTORY TIMING BELT, W/PUMP, HEAD HAS NEVER BEEN REMOVED ETC. NOW HAS 176K AND THE ONLY PROBLEM NOW IS THAT IT IS OVER-COOLING, GONNA FIX THAT THIS WEEKEND, SHOULD BE EASY SEEING AS HOW THE WATERPUMP AND THERMOSTAT ARE FACTORY.......EASY DIAGNOSIS. EVERYWHERE I READ OR HEAR ABOUT THIS ENGINE I HEAR NOTHING BUT PRAISE. YOUR EXPERIENCE SHOULD BE GOOD. GOOD LUCK!!
