LAST EDITED ON 29-Apr-01 AT 08:10 PM (EST)[p]It sounds like my 2.3L is pinging in my 96 ranger. I have replaced the timing belt. I have also replace the plugs at 60,000 with Bosch Platinums and the wires with OEM ford. I have a K&N filter and a new fuel filter. It does it under a load. I am using 87 octane. The mileage has also dropped from 26 to 22. I ran STP fuel system cleaner in the silver bottle and it helped for one tank. That stuff is expensive for every fill-up. Is one injector plugged or all of them dirty? If so do I replace or have them cleaned. How hard are they to replace? Thank you in advance. I have 85,300
Lunar, try pulling your "octane reduction plug". It is a little grey plug that is attached to your wiring harness on the passenger side, right up at firewall. Taking it out will retard your engine timing about 2-3 degrees, enough to stop pinging on low octane gas.

Thanks I will try that. It is supposed to run 87 octane though. I would like to fix the problem. I see what your saying though to see if that is the problem. Thanks.
That was the problem now what is the cure? I don't want to just unplug that chip and let it go at that. Thanks though. I feel better knowing what the trouble is. Should I try higher octane fuel. I don't really want to. It is too expensive and I am in college. I need to scrounge every penny as is.
Lunargreen, I have seen several fixes for this. One is to clean your MAF sensor. Another is to clean fuel injectors. Another is to de-carbonize pistons. I am just running mine without the plug. It seems to give it a little more low rpm torque, and my fuel mileage didn't change at all.

Well I filled up this morning with 87. I drove about 110 miles today and no ping. I did put the chip back in last night after I returned from my test. I will let it go for now but will probably clean my injectors and MAP sensor this summer or if it does again. I will be able to afford it this summer because I will be able to work full time. Thanks for your help. I think I will be able to study for finals and not worry about it for now.
