Thermostat switch ?

I have a 76 f-100 with a 390. The thermostat housing has a switch on it. The wires going to the switch have been cut( it was like this when I got the truck ). Are these wires necessary? Is this switch necessary? I know it is not working now, because of the wires being cut, but I don't know why they were cut, and I have seen some other FE engines without the switch. Would it hurt if I took it off completely and just plugged the hole? It would clean up the engine compartment a little.

It's probably just a temperature sender for a gauge. Does your temp gauge work? If so, don't worry about it. If you don't like the look of it, pull it out and plug it.

The sending unit for the temp gauge is in the manifold, and the gauge works good. I just don't want to take a chance of ripping something off the engine that I may regret later. I may take it off anyway. Thanks
